This has been answered in other Help threads. The jist of it is that plant species names have been changed over the years. The currently accepted name is on the form. The scientists know both synonyms. We are only asked to deal with species names when it needs to be transcribed from the image to the form.

That's right, thanks gardenmaeve. As some of the specimens date back hundreds of years, scientific names have changed (sometimes multiple times!). Before we uploaded the scanned herbarium sheets to the Orchid Observers website we updated the scientific names in our database as part of the Museum's ongoing curatorial work, and designed the Orchid Observers website so that the currently accepted name is shown in the form and can't be edited.
