While I have some sympathy for using the modern accepted name it is not good practice. Names often change and if you loose the connection to the original determination you will no longer be able to translate to any new name. I am responsible for a species data collection and I do have to use synonyms when the original name is not available to the database. Here you could have used the original name and reported on the current name. This species has had many different names and while many may be due to naming in different geographic areas and being realigned we do not know what will happen in the future. For me it makes me question the value of continuing if I know there is data loss in the output.
