Orchid Observers Talk
I labelled it as hybrid given the uncertainty.
Couldn't see a VC on the sheet, but N. Somerset is VC6 so entered that.
Locality was incorrectly entered as Maidstone before.
The species identification transcribed here seems very wrong: surely this is autumn ladies tresses and not coralroot orchid.
Locality was previously mis-entered as Axminster! Can't read locality.
No species name on label.
Think the date is right here: the printed "Date and reference number" seems to be year, month, day in that order.
Locality was entered wrongly so corrected.
I think this should be VC91, but the only VC on the page says 90. St Cyrus NNR is in VC91.
Confused by this one as the VC written is 65, but surely Brough is in VC61?
Locality and VC were entered wrong so I have changed.
Confused by this: typed label says Rhum as locality, but written mark says Harris, although it is not clear if this is location or person.
No VC written on but should be VC28 - West Norfolk
Funny that my work address is also Heslington. Fragrant orchids sadly long gone.
This has to be densiflora, not CFO, as noted in the original label and from the site locality.
Beautifully deep purple Early Marsh orchid
This was annotated as a hill in Edinburgh, but the label and VC both clearly indicate Fife. I could not decipher the name of the Hill.
That's greedy. BTW, the date is cropped off this page.
Locality and VC were wrong for this: was down as Surrey, where there is a Merton, but the sheet says VC 28 which is Merton Norfolk.
The database name attached to this is wrong: it is down as CRO, and it is in fact an ALT.
Munched lip
Null VC
That's a beauty and it appears to be in quite an open situation.
Deep colour.
Based on habitat I said CFO but height of spikes suggests MFO
Another null VC
VC is labelled as NULL (?)
Thought this had both CSO and SMO characters.
Ethereal image
That is an impressive clump
Just a common spotted I think so surprised to see this caged: is it to prevent mowng?
Well, quite an ugly duckling.
Was stumped by this but I agree with marsh helleborine: seen spikes like this just never without any flowers.
Meadow brown, and ringlet.
There was no vice county label but Braemar is in VC 92
This is Jersey, which is VC 113. The pencil mark says OJ?
I have changed the date on this as the date entered was the date of a letter, not the collection date.
Specimenas 2 and 3 on this sheet have been incorrectly assigned to VC63. Robin Hoods Bay is in fact in VC62
These flowers seem to have maintained their colour!
Looks like fairly standard common spotted to me
Width of lip suggests this is Heath Spotted
Betty Hill is a very small village in Sutherland, and I suspect there is only one hotel!
VC was previously wrongly written as 15: have changed to H15.
I wasn't sure if the specimen and label were connected given the envelope and pencil line separating them, and other label present.
Is there a Linton on the Isle of Wight?
This has been IDed as Heath Fragrant but the label on the sheet says Common Fragrant.
This refers to a location on the Grand Union Canal near Maple Cross. The years I think all refer to specimens collected at the same location
The page says VC10, refering to the specimen on the right. However, the other specimens say Linton on the label, which is Cambs .
No VC written, but West Sutherland is VC108
Pugsley, no-less!
Sorry, with the magnification available I could not make anything of this label. Note sure the date was correct, and locality was illegible
I could not see a VC attached to this specimen so have deleted the previous VC inserted.
I think this is likely to be Royston Heath, also called Therfield heath, now a SSSI.
Looks from the flower and vigour that this could be a hybrid between CSO and one of the marsh orchids.
Very impressive clump
Wow: that's quite a collection.
Very green sepals
Beautiful pic
This one made me laugh
That's really wierd
Classic CSO
Richly coloured HSO I thought
Gorgeous pic
Nice and clear
CSO-HSO hybrid possibly
They are not often as clear as that! HFO
I suspect hybrid HSO-NMO
Classic early marsh
Just frog I think
Wasn't sure about this one: flower shape and colour said HSO, but spike too big and in the end I plumped for SMO.
I also said MFO and was also doubtful
Height of spike and lip shape made me suspect MFO
I suspect a southern marsh-common spotted hyrbid
Must be a hybrid
Soldier beetle
Lip longer than wide, looks like HFO.
Lip obviously longer than wide, few flowers, seems like HFO to me.
Those pollinia look parallel to me, hence I'd say lesser BF
cuckoo-spit=spittlebug
Strange coloured fly orchid: bet someone has given this a name.
Very small image, and on its side, makes it hard to see the flowers on this one, but I've had a guess.
Looks hybrid-like
I suspect hybrid
Probably hybrid
Interesting markings
Ooo.
Colour seems unusual on lip.
Weak leaf spotting and flower suggest a hybrid.
There is no VC for these specimens, but Langwith is now Wheldrake, in VC 61, which is given for the specimens above
I saw one of these in Yorkshire once, and was told it was a white form of spotted orchid, although I was never convinced.
Green thing at the top looks like a cocoon.
Cuckoo-spit = spittlebug
Cuckoo spit=spittlebug
probably common spotted but odd flower shape
Cuckoo spit indicates spittlebugs
Looks like a hybrid
Flower shape and leaf spotting suggest hybrid
Lip longer than wide I thought. Habitat looks wrong for Heath fragrant though and flower spike reasonably tall
Looks like a hybrid due to lack of leaf spotting
Hard to say from the second photo
Leaf spotting suggests hybrid
Couldn't quite see this one: guessed gter.
I don't bother marking more than one.
No idea what this is: some white form of one of the marsh orchids?
Hooray: an insect!
Could be anything.
Not an orchid
Lovely view
Guessing pyramidal
Strange one: hybrid?
Can't tell if not open
Not much one can say about that.
Another distant image.
Distant photos are not much use
Couldn't magnify enough to see good detail but my impression is gter butterfly.
Photos should be of the flower head of a single plant, not a whole field.
beautiful detail: easy to ID
Far too distant to do anything with. Here is someone that didn't read the instructions for photography.
Wow. Extra sepals?
Early spider
There is a beetle in this image, but it is not on the orchid.
Photo too small, so even with zooming all the way in I couldn't see enough detail to reliably name this. I guessed Gter butterfly.
This could be a hybrid, but I've put it down as common spotted. Lack of leaf spots and dark colour are suggestive of other species
Pale early purple: see its neighbour bottom left
Spotted leaves suggest a hybrid
Too early to ID
Now that's a protected area.
Looks like a hybrid to me without any leaf spotting
I only got the top image loading, so hard to ID
Hard to ID without open flower
Looks like sword leaved helleborine
This specimen does not show a flowering shoot.
I labelled it as hybrid given the uncertainty.
