What are the rope/necklace things for?

Just curious as to what the rope/necklace looking things are for? Are they put on the sheet before taking the photo to help see the size? or did the collector put them on, and if so what is their purpose? Thanks so much!

Hi Bonnie - these objects are weighted ropes used to flatten any buckling in the herbarium sheet and are used during the digitization process to maximise the quality of the image. They are not integral to the specimen sheet and are removed after photography. Hope that helps!

That makes so much sense. I took botany in college and your right the pages do not stay flat after the specimens are attached. Thanks again for answering my question!
