Orchis latifolia?

  • AdrianW2 by AdrianW2

The specimen is labelled as "Orchis latifolia", what's the current name? Which brings up the next question; are we trying to note the name on the specimen as it was written, or should we use the current interpretation of that name? i.e. Dactylorhiza majalis (maybe)

Hi Adrian, thanks for your question: if no species name appears in the species field, we are asking people to transcribe the species name verbatim as it appears on the label and as the collector recorded it (historical herbarium sheet labels often record a former name or names for a specimen which differ from the currently accepted name - click on the ? button on the transcribe page for more information on species name). If a transcriber can accurately ascribe the current identity then that's great! Where a species name already appears in the species field the current name has been ascribed and can't be modified. Btw - Orchis latifolia is synonymous with Dactylorhiza incarnata. Hope this helps!
